Columbus visited Jamaica in 1494 and the island was ruled by
Spain until seised by the British in 1655. On August 6, 1962,
Jamaica gained independence. In 1974 the new socialist
government took control of 50% of foreign companies, developed
basic welfare laws and provisions, but unemployment continued to
increase. Following the election of Edward Seaga, relations with
the United States increased and Jamaica has since broken
diplomatic relations with Cuba. In 1982, President Reagan became
the first U.S. President to visit the island and voiced strong
support for the free-market system being instigated by Mr. Seaga.
Jamaica took part in the October 1983 invasion of Grenada with
United States troops.
